The Atlas Alabama website was born out of the idea that while plentiful resources exist for Alabama entrepreneurs and small business owners, these resources are spread throughout several different departments, agencies, and centers across the state. Atlas Alabama is a free online resource for entrepreneurs and small business owners in Alabama that aggregates these resources in one place. Atlas Alabama is designed to help current and future small business owners discover available state and local resources and learn business basics for starting or growing a business. Atlas Alabama was developed in partnership with the Alabama Small Business Commission (ASBC) to facilitate and promote small business development in Alabama.

The governor of Alabama created the Alabama Small Business Commission to serve as an advisory body in formulating policies, encouraging innovation, and discussing issues critical to the economic growth of small and independent businesses and their interests in the State of Alabama. The Commission promotes policies to assist new business start-ups and expansion of existing businesses. The 30 member Commission is comprised of small and independent business owners in various industries throughout the state who serve by appointment. The 12 member Advisory Committee serves as a technical and informational resource to the Commission.
